Tampa, Florida (January 11th, 2021) — Aero Simulation Inc. (ASI) is pleased to announce its latest win to provide an innovative lightweight, containerized B-1 Virtual-Reality Aircrew Training Device (VRATD) to the United States Air Force (USAF). This is a Direct to Phase II Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) contract awarded by the USAF Simulators Program Office (SPO) at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in conjunction with an AFWERX Commercial Solutions Opening (CSO). The effort is part of the SPO’s innovative push for a Lightweight Simulator Ecosystem (LSE) meant to revolutionize aircrew training within the USAF. Working closely with the SPO, Air Force Global Strike Command (AFGSC), and B-1 aircrew, ASI will develop a lightweight VRATD that incorporates actual B-1 Operational Flight Programs (OFPs), a Weapon Systems Trainer (WST) equivalent high-fidelity host, DMO ready middleware, and cybersecurity that is based on a gaming engine.
“ASI is very excited to work with AFGSC, the SPO, and our B-1 customer to deliver this innovative product to the B-1 aircrew,” said Mike Conti, Chief Executive Officer, ASI. “We are always striving to be innovative in our approaches to the products and services we provide our customers. When the SPO announced their initiative for the LSE, we had already been working on solutions and ideas that fit the LSE paradigm and could really improve the availability and cost of mission platforms by merging high-fidelity aircraft and simulation software with COTS hardware and gaming software.”
ASI is the prime contractor for the SPO on the B-1 Training System which consists of WSTs, Cockpit Procedures Trainers, and Maintenance Training Devices across multiple sites providing aircrew mission training over Distributed Mission Operations. This award is the first SBIR ASI has been awarded and the first time working with AFWERX. ASI will execute all elements of the contract in producing a new VRATD for B-1 pilot training including all program management, software and hardware engineering design, and manufacturing.
